Electric Boat designs and builds nuclear submarines for the U.S. Navy. We have recently completed an augmented reality (AR) project to assist in wiring electrical cabinets. This work was funded by the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP, www.nsrp.org). A follow-on project is underway to use AR to assist with installation of cables on board the ship during construction. Cable installation is a difficult task requiring teams of people to work in a coordinated effort in tight spaces. This project will provide users with a graphical overlay identifying the correct hangers, and a path highlighting the sequence of hangers to route each cable. The goal is to significantly reduce labor time for cable installation while improving product quality. The presentation will discuss lessons learned during the completed cabinet wiring project and various practical aspects of the current cable installation project. These include AR development in a large industrial company setting, a new markerless registration algorithm, and evaluation of AR display devices.
